A one year ‘school-based’ programme involving teacher training in two of our alliance schools and short academic blocks of study at university. When you successfully complete the course you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
What is School Direct?
A School Direct course allows you to train in a school of your choice in conjunction with a university provider. The St Polycarp’s CTSA is made up of a group of schools working in partnership with both the University of Reading and St Mary’s University, Twickenham. You do the majority of the training in school and complete blocks of academic studies at either of our partnership universities. The School Direct teacher training route is a popular choice for those who hope to secure a role in the network of schools where they train.
You get the best of both worlds! You will receive intensive support from the St Polycarp's CTSA and your teaching colleagues as well as completing academic work at university. The programme commences in September 2019. You will train at two alliance schools and your academic studies will take place at university in short block periods during the 12 month course. The university side is run by excellent leaders in the field of education.
Students receive intensive career support from our highly experienced teachers and mentors. The principles of academic rigour on School Direct are the same as on university-led courses. Students are equally eligible for a training bursary or scholarship and can apply for the same financial support, such as student loans.
A choice of training schools
As the lead school with an Ofsted Outstanding rating, you will either work in St Polycarp's Catholic Primary School, or you may start your vocational experience in any of the other exemplary Alliance schools. There are several options during the one year programme, please state your preferred schools from the UCAS page when applying. If you have a specific school in mind that is not part of the St Polycarp’s CTSA, we will do everything possible to secure part of your training in that school. Contact us and we will endeavour to put the necessary arrangements in place.
A choice of universities
We work with two different universities, The University of Reading and St Mary’s University, Twickenham, who both offer a PGCE with QTS. At Reading University, students also have the option to undertake a QTS-only route into teaching.
